Best Shot Monday: Della and Changing Your Perception of "The Pound"

Della_A173468

Meet sweet Della. She is pure love! I spent a little time with her last week and fell in love with her and her sweet little pink stitches around her eyes, so I wanted to tell you a little more about her and what those stitches are for. Some people think of municipal shelters as simply "the pound," and given that, may not realize all that many municipal shelters actually do for the animals in their care. Della had eyelid entropion, an abnormality of the eyelids in which the eyelid rolls inward. This inward rolling often causes the hair on the surface of the eyelid to rub against the cornea resulting in pain, corneal ulcers, perforations, or pigment developing on the cornea which can interfere with vision. Della had this condition on both eyes, poor girl! Can you imagine the pain she was experiencing? But thanks to the awesome vet team at the City of Tallahassee Animal Service Center, she's on the road to recovery and pain-free vision with a fairly simple surgery. Her stitches will come out two weeks post surgery.

So yes, municipal shelters are more than just dog pounds! They have vet teams! And those vet teams perform not only your standard spay and neuter surgeries, but also surgeries like this one to better the lives of the animals in their care...every single day. Della's case is not an isolated one. So the next time you are thinking about adding a new family member to your family, please do consider adopting from your local municipal shelter instead of shopping for that pure bred puppy. Our shelters are chock full of amazing, and amazingly adorable, dogs like Della...who's already home with her family!
